Three years ago my cousin's son was stillborn.  His partner Lisa brought the baby home to say hello and good-bye.  Her story of spending time with him is beautiful.  The comments however, reveal our culture's fear and discomfort of being with the dead.

    Thank you for sharing this. I just had someone request information from me - the woman's sister's baby died in utero and has yet to be delivered, she was looking for info about bringing the baby home.

    I was able to tell her about the newborn that died a few hours after birth in our community last year, the parents brought him home,the mother held him during the at-home visitation.

    It shocked me, at first, to see her holding her dead baby, I was not expecting it. But as soon as I got over my surprise it made perfect sense to me. AS fate would have it, I was attending this baby's visitation on the 34th anniversary of the birth and death of my firstborn daughter. I only got to hold her once.

    I was not one of those assisting the family, but because I am part of the Threshold Care Circle, I was invited to hold the baby. It was so powerful, so amazing, what an honor to hold this precious baby.

    Seeing these parents hold and honor their baby at their home funeral, knowing that the only reason they knew about home funerals was because of the organization I initiated, which I did out of my own acquaintance with death, that started with the death of my daughter - it was a great healing, a coming full circle.
