FINAL PASSAGES
Founded in 1995, Final Passages is the first non-profit program to offer education to families and professionals about the benefits of participating in family-directed home funerals, wakes, vigils and in-home ceremonies. Final Passages is at the forefront of reclaiming little-known options to restore important traditions of caring for our beloveds at the time of death, and helping families to accept death as a natural part of the life cycle.

Its founder, Jerrigrace Lyons, has guided more than 400 family-directed home funerals. She authored a Guidebook for Creating Home Funerals, an educational presentation, Bringing Funerals Back Home, and is featured in the PBS POV film, a Family Undertaking. Jerrigrace has appeared on radio, television and in worldwide publications including The Wall Street Journal (front page), the NY and LA Times, and The London Telegraph. She is also a founder and board member emeritus of the National Home Funeral Alliance in the US.

OUR PURPOSE
Final Passages’ mission is to preserve the innate and legal rights of families and communities to care for their own dead in a personal, respectful, environmentally sound and culturally and nurturing manner.

We prepare and support individuals in making informed decisions about funeral arrangements, specializing in the field of family-directed home funerals. Final Passages offer resources for green, home-based funerals and have trained hundreds of people to guide family-directed home funerals, many of whom have become trainers themselves.

Our intention is to create a sustainable movement and a national network of support groups that bring information and guidance to communities. We are committed to reconnecting to our heritage, educating and empowering individuals, families and communities, and encouraging those who further the practice of home funerals.

Our work serves community members from all cultural, economic and religious perspectives. Our education enables people to take charge of commemorating an individual death passage with the support of family and friends, knowing a family member or a legally assigned agent can act in lieu of a funeral director, making all of the decisions and orchestrating some or all of the funeral arrangements.

OUR TRAININGS
Final Passages offers a 3-level certificate training program called Honoring Life’s Final Passage, about preparing for death, reclaiming rituals of our ancestors in death midwifery and home funeral guidance, and culminating in a Graduate Practicum.

Level 1: A Conscious and Sacred Approach to Dying includes exploring our fears, practical paperwork and directives, the work of an end-of-life doula and assisting people across the threshold.

Level 2: Home Funerals and Green Burial includes care and honoring rituals for a body following death, self-care for death doulas/midwives, the use of aromatherapy in ceremony and green options for the disposition of a body.

Level 3 Training and Alumni Reunion: Reclaiming the Wisdom Traditions and Art of Death Midwifery and Home Funeral Guidance includes home funeral role-play, grief, when NOT to offer a home funeral, shrouding, green burials, autopsy care.

Graduate Practicum is a 2-day in-depth opportunity to practice body care, family consultation, legal paperwork and community education skills.
